Dörtyol translates signified "crossroad point". It was and is the intersection of traffic routes and commercial routes. Today here is the highway of Iskenderun to Adana. However, still much more importantly is the harbour arrangement where especially coal and oil is landed. Also the ironworks Isdemir is in Dörtyol. The industry destroyed a lot of the regional beauty. Behind Dörtyol rise the Nur-mountains (Amanos mountains) which were a scene of the first fight between the Turkish liberation movement and the allied occupying powers (France) after 1st world war. In the year 333 B.C. the battle between the Persian Darius and Alexander the Great took place at this place.
